First State bragging rights are on the line as Delaware State visits the University of Delaware in the annual Route 1 Rivalry. The Hornets (4-5) are coming off a 76-66 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore in their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener in Memorial Hall last Saturday. The win snapped a five-game losing streak for DSU. Tahj Tate led the way with a season-high 24 points. Tate was 10-for-16 from the field and also led the Hornets with three assists. Casey Walker added a season-high 15 points for the Hornets. His performance was highlighted by five three-point field goals. DSU recorded 10 blocks in the contest, with Kendall Gray and Marques Oliver collecting five each.
Delaware (3-6) also snapped a losing streak in its last outing. The Hens are coming off a 68-59 win over Radford in their home opener on Tuesday to snap a five-game skid. UD's Davon Saddler led all players with 18 points and five assists in the contest. He also nailed a team-high four three-point shots in the game. Jamelle Hagins recorded a double-double for the Hens, collecting 16 points and 10 rebounds. He also had a game-high four blocks.
DSU vs. DELAWARE (UD leads 10-2)
The Hornets and Hens are meeting for the fourth straight year and 13th time overall. Delaware holds a 10-2 series lead, highlighted by an eight-game win streak from 1992 to 2000. The state's only Div. I men's basketball teams did not meet from 2001 to '08. The Hens have won the last two meetings in the series, including a 58-42 victory at DSU's Memorial Hall last season. Jamelle Hagins had 21 points, 19 rebounds and five blocks to lead the Hens in last year's meetings. Devon Sadler added 16 points for UD. Casey Walker was high scorer for Delaware State with 15 points, while Amere May added 14 for the Hornets. The last time the teams met at Delaware the Hens posted a 61-50 win. The Hornets are 0-5 all-time at the Carpenter Center.
