HORNETS RUN PAST HAWKS IN MEAC OPENER

Dover, Del. (Dec. 1, 2012) --- Tahj Tate led three Delaware State players in double figures with a season-high 24 points in the Hornets' 76-66 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore in the MEAC opener for each team in Memorial Hall today.

The Hornets snapped a five-game losing streak to improve to 4-5 overall. Delaware State is 4-0 at home this season. UMES fell to 0-7.

Tate was 10-of-16 from the field and 2-for-2 at the free throw line. Casey Walker added 15 points for the Hornets. His performance was highlighted by five three-point field goals, one short of his career high.

Tyshawn Bell contributed 11 points for DSU.

Delaware State had 10 blocks in the contest, five each for Kendall Gray and Marques Oliver. Gray has 19 blocks in his last five games. The Hornets were fifth among all NCAA Division I teams in blocks at 7.9 per game entering the contest.

The Hornets used a 19-4 run to take control in the first half. Jordan Lawson capped off the spurt with two free throws to give the Hornets a 21-9 lead with 9:27 left in the first half. Walker and Bell nailed two three-pointers each to highlight the run.

UMES trimmed the Hornets' lead to six before Tate nailed a three-pointer in the final seconds of the half to give DSU a 32-23 lead at the break.

Walker led the Hornets with 12 points in the first half.

DSU stormed out the gate in the second half, pulling ahead 44-28 on a jumper by Tate with 14:06 left to play. Tate scored seven points during the early second half spurt.

The Hornets opened up their biggest lead, 53-36, on a lay-up by Miles Bowman with 10:13 remaining.

UMES answered with a 20-8 rally, and pulled to within 61-56 on a three-pointer by Kyree Jones (24 points) with 4:03 remaining.

Marques Oliver hit two free throws and a short jumper on the Hornets' next two possessions to stretch DSU's lead to 65-56 with 2:51 left.

The Hornets were 24-for-48 from the field (50.0%), including 9-of-21 from three-point territory. UMES hit 22 of its 57 shots from the floor (38.6%). After failing to connect on seven three-point attempts in the first half, the Hawks were 6-for-13 in the second half to finish 6-of-20 for the game.

Delaware State held a 37-26 rebound advantage in the game. Oliver led the Hornets with eight boards, while Gray added seven.

The Hornets return to action next Saturday (Dec. 8) at Delaware. Game time is 2:00 p.m. in Newark, Del.
