Dover (June 29, 2009) --- Delaware State University Head Softball Coach Jeff Savage has announced that former Penn State University catcher/first baseman Janelle Lukens will attend DSU and compete for the Hornets next season. Lukens, a native of Williamsport, Pa., has two years of college eligibility remaining after competing in 15 games for the Nittany Lions the last two seasons.
“We are excited to welcome Janelle to the Hornet softball family,” said Savage, who has a 279-246 overall record and one MEAC championship in 10 seasons at DSU. She brings valuable Big 10 experience to our program. We are counting on her to be a team leader as well as a versatile performer for us next season.”
Prior to attending Penn State, Lukens was a standout at Williamsport Area High School. She helped lead the school to a 2007 district championship. Her scholastic honors include three Williamsport Offensive Player-of-the-Year awards, conference rookie-of-the-year, two all-conference first team selections and an all-district first team pick.
Savage says Delaware State expects to add five new players for the 2010 campaign. The Hornets had just one senior this past season, which ended with a 23-24 overall record and second place finish in the MEAC Northern Division.
