Dover (June 10, 2009) --- Delaware State University Head Women's Soccer Coach Nitan Soni has announced the addition of two local players to the 2009 Hornet roster. Midfielder Candace Wyre of Smyrna, Del., recently signed the National Letter of Intent to attend Delaware State and compete for the Hornets this coming season. Wyre was Smyrna High School's top scorer the past two years and helped lead the Eagles to their first state tournament appearance as a senior last season. She plans to major in Education at DSU.
“Candace is no stranger to scoring goals,” Soni said. “Her speed and direct approach to the net will be an asset to our team. She is an aggressive player who always finds a way to have an impact on the game. We are excited to see how she develops at the Division I level.”
Dover resident and Caesar Rodney High School product Chelsea Brown will also join the Hornets this season after transferring from Christopher Newport University in Virginia. A midfielder, Brown competed in every match at Christopher Newport last season. She helped lead Caesar Rodney to four Henlopen Conference championships during her years with the Riders. Brown, who has two years of college eligibility remaining, is majoring in Chemistry at Delaware State.
“Chelsea brings solid collegiate experience to our team,” said Soni. “This experience, combined with her knowledge and understanding of the game will help strengthen our team. She is a true student of the game, and we're expecting great things for her at DSU.”
Delaware State has actively recruited local talent since Soni became head coach prior to the 2008 season.
“I am delighted to add these talented Delaware youngsters to our women's soccer team,” said Soni. “As a state university, I believe we are a great option for all Delaware players to receive a quality education and compete at the highest level of collegiate soccer. Each of these ladies is academically solid and will have an impact on our team.”
The eight-year-old Delaware State women's soccer program will begin its first season in the Great West Conference this year. The Hornets kick-off the 2009 schedule Sep. 1 at Rider in Lawrenceville, N.J. The home opener is Sep. 11 against Canisius.
