HORNETS HOLD FIRST SPRING FOOTBALL SCRIMMAGE

Dover (Apr. 4, 2009) --- The Delaware State football team held its first full contact scrimmage of the spring at blustery Alumni Stadium this morning. The offensive vs. defense scrimmage featured about 75 plays. The wind played havoc on the passing game throughout the scrimmage, although the offense converted two short throws into touchdowns.

Wide receiver Travis Tarpley scored on a 40-yard pass from Boston College transfer quarterback Chris Johnson. Tarpley received the pass near the line of scrimmage, and broke several tackles on his run to the endzone.

The offense also scored a touchdown on a short swing pass from Anthony Glaud to Cincinnati transfer running back Tahree McQueen.

Redshirt freshman QB Nick Elko also saw action for the offense.

The defense dominated much of the early portion of the scrimmage. The “D” forced three turnovers, including a fumble that was returned 60 yards for a touchdown by Jason Randall. Micah Brown also had an interception for the defense.

The Hornets will continue their spring drills on Monday at 7:00 at Alumni Stadium.

Delaware State will kick-off the 2009 season vs. MEAC rival Florida A&M on Sep. 5 in Tallahassee, Florida. The '09 slate also includes the first regular season meeting with the University of Delaware on Sep. 19 at UD Stadium in Newark, and a clash against the Michigan Wolverines on  Oct. 17 in Ann Arbor, Mich.
