LADY HORNETS SUFFER OVERTIME LOSS TO PIRATES

Hampton, Va. (Feb. 7, 2009) --- For the second straight Saturday, the Delaware State women's basketball team needed a late rally to force an overtime period. However, this time the Lady Hornets ran out of gas in the extra frame in a 68-64 loss to Hampton at the HU Convocation Center Saturday afternoon.

 

The loss snapped a four-game win streak for Delaware State, which fell to 11-11 overall and 7-2 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). Hampton won for the second time in three games to improve to 8-12 and 5-4.

 

Hampton outscored the Lady Hornets 7-3 in the overtime.

 

The Lady Hornets trailed 60-55 after two Hampton free throws with 1:04 left in regulation. DSU's Keyhana Wakefield answered with a lay-up to cut the Pirates' lead to 60-57 with 47 seconds remaining. After a Hampton turnover, Wakefield hit a short jumper to trim Hampton's lead to 60-59 with 35 seconds left.

 

Hampton's Bernadette Fortune hit one-of-two free throws with 17 seconds left to give the Pirates a 61-59 lead.  Wakefield struck again for the Lady Hornets, hitting a driving lay-up to tie the score with six seconds left in regulation.

 

The Pirates were unable to get off a shot as the buzzer sounded to end the second half.

 

In the overtime, Delaware State pulled to within 66-64 after Wakefield hit one-of-two free throws with 2:06 left. That was the score when the Lady Hornets regained possession with 17 seconds remaining in overtime. Delaware State's Selena Galloway missed a potential game-winning three-point shot with 12 seconds left.

 

Fortune hit two free throws with seven seconds left to seal the win for Hampton.

 

Delaware State led by as many as five in the first half, but trailed 31-26 at the break.

 

The Lady Hornets scored 12 of the first 14 points in the second half, and opened up a 38-33 lead on a jumper by Wakefield with 15:29 left in regulation.

 

DSU led 47-42 after a lay-up by Galloway with 8:04 remaining in the second half.

Sonia Johnson was high scorer for the lady Hornets with 20 points, while Wakefield added 15. Johnson has reached the 20-point mark in each of the last two games.

 

Quanneisha Perry led four Hampton players in double figures with14 points. She also tied for game-high honors with 11 rebounds.

 

Delaware State was outrebounded 47-35 in the contest.

 

The Lady Hornets return to action on Monday at Howard. Game time is 6:00 p.m.
