Norfolk, Va. (Oct. 28, 2019) --- Delaware State setter Freja Gortz (fr.) has been honored by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference for two stellar performances last week. Gortz was selected as the MEAC Setter-of-the-Week after tallying 82 assists (13.7 per set), 20 digs and two service aces in 3-0 DSU victories over Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M last weekend.
A native of Sonderborg, Denmark, Gortz had 46 assists (15.3 p/s) and seven digs in the Florida A&M contest. The assist total was the most in a three-set match in recorded team history. The previous high was 43.
She collected 36 assists (12.0 p/s) and a career-best 13 digs in the win over Bethune-Cookman.
Gortz is the fifth Hornet to receive player-of-the-week honors by the MEAC this season.
Jordan Vang (fr.) and Ryanne Burnett (fr.) has each received two rookie-of-the-week awards, while Anadys Valentin (fr.) was the first rookie-of-the-week honoree of the season on Sep. 2.
The MEAC has also recognized Delaware State's Jelena Dukic (jr.) as Setter-of-the-Week this season.
The Hornets, currently fourth in the MEAC North standings with a 5-5 division record, return to action this Friday (Nov. 1) at home against Maryland-Eastern Shore. The Hawks are fifth in the standings with a 4-6 mark. DSU is looking to avenge a 3-1 loss to MDES on Oct. 15 in Princess Anne, Md.
The top four teams in the MEAC Northern and Southern divisions qualify for the post-season championship tournament.
Delaware State, 10-15 overall this season under first-year head coach Bruce Atkinson, is seeking its first MEAC Tournament bid since 2010.
