HORNETS BLANKED BY EAGLES IN MEAC OPENER

Baltimore, Md. (Sep. 27, 2019) ---The Delaware State volleyball team dropped its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener this evening, falling to Coppin State 3-0 at PEC Arena. The scores were 25-21, 25-20 and 25-22.

Miajavon Coleman led all players with 14 kills, while Sydney Hicks added 11 to lead the Eagles. Coppin State's Brianna Lang dished out a match-high 35 assists and teammate Ashley Roman led all players with 14 digs.

Jordan Vang (fr.) led Delaware State with 10 kills, while Jelena Dukic (jr.) had a team-high 30 assists and Jasmal Cruz (fr.) topped the Hornets with 12 digs.

In the opening set, Delaware State scored the first three points and led 8-6 after a Coppin State error. The Eagles responded by scoring eight of the next 10 points and opening up a 14-10 lead on a DSU error.

The Hornets bounced back with a 4-0 run to tie the set at 14-14.

Coppin State held its biggest first set lead 24-19 on a service ace by Lang.

Delaware State held a 10-6 lead in the second set before the Eagles fought back. CSU scored 10 of the next 16 points, and tied the set at 16-16 on an ace by Taina Leao.

After DSU regained the lead 17-16 on a block by Mayah Ngundam and Sydney Armbrister, the Eagles scored nine of the last 12 points to earn the set win and open up a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set, the Hornets trailed 17-11 before clawing back. DSU used a 9-3 rally to tie the set 20-20 after a kill by Vang.

The score was 22-22 when Coppin State scored the last three points to win the set and match.

Delaware State posted a .237 hitting percentage in the match, collecting 32 kills and 3 errors on 80 attacks.

Coppin State (4-10; 1-0 MEAC) tallied 41 kills and 16 errors on 93 attempts for a .269 attack percentage in the match.

The Hornets held a 31-29 advantage in digs.

Lang also led all players with five aces to lead the Eagles to a 13-2 advantage in the category.

Delaware State (5-10; 1-0 MEAC) is back in action on Sunday (Sep. 29) with another MEAC match at Morgan State. The Hornets will play their home opener next Friday (Oct. 4) against four-time defending MEAC champ Howard. The match is set for 6:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
