Bethlehem, Pa. (Sep. 7, 2019) --- Delaware State went toe-to-toe with co-host Lehigh in two of the three sets, but the Mountain Hawks held on for a 3-0 victory in the Crosstown Tournament today. Lehigh won the first set 25-22 and opened up a 2-0 lead in the match. The teams played a marathon third set, won by the Mountain Hawks 30-28 to clinch their third straight victory (3-3).
The Hornets dropped their fourth straight match, including three tournament contests, to fall to 1-6 this season.
Ryanne Burnett (fr.) led the Hornets in kills for the second straight match, recording 10 in 25 attacks (.200 pct.). Sydney Lewis (fr.) was second on the team with eight kills without an error on 14 attempts (.571).
Anadys Valentin (fr.) had five kills and a match-high 18 digs, while Sydney Armbrister (gr.) tallied five winners on seven attacks (.714).
Lehigh totaled 47 kills (.291), including 12 by Hannah Wright to lead all players. Sarah Carman recorded 40 assists for the Hawks.
There were 12 ties in the first set, although the Hornets never led. DSU forced the last tie at 16-16 after a kill by Burnett. Lehigh won nine of the last 15 points to clinch the first set victory.
In the second set, Delaware State scored first but failed to lead again. The Hornets trailed by 11 points on two occasions in set two.
There were nine ties and five lad changes in the third set. The Hornets led 4-1 before rallied to take a 13-8 lead.
The Hawks opened up a 19-13 advantage before a late DSU rally. The Hornets responded with an 11-5 run, and tied the set at 24-24 on a Lehigh error.
Delaware State was a point away from the set win after another Lehigh miscue gave the Hornets a 25-24 lead.
The Mountain Hawks scored the next two points to regain the lead, 26-25. The set was also tied at 27 and 28 before Lehigh scored the last two points for the set and match win.
