HORNETS' REINING TEAM ADVANCES IN NCEA TOURNEY

Waco, Tex. (Apr. 17, 2019) --- Delaware State's Reining team has reached the quarterfinals of the 2019 National Collegiate Equestrian Association Events Championships at the Extraco Center today.

The 10th seeded Hornets advanced to the round of eight with a 3-1 victory over United Equestrian Conference rival and No. 7 seed Tennessee Martin. DSU also held an 823.5-to-609.5 advantage in total points.  It marked the first post-season victory for the Hornet Reining team and second in school history. The Delaware State Flat team captured the first NCEA Tournament win vs. South Dakota State in 2018.

Shelbe Jarrett, Amber Van Segbrook and Grace Wilson had winning rides for the Hornets. Jarrett, riding on “Stoner, ” posted a score of 206.5 to defeat the Seahawks' Hannah McDonald (202.5).

Wilson also totaled 206.5 points aboard “Craig” in her victory, while Van Segbrook collected 201 points on “Diesel” in her winning ride.

Angelina Watts had an impressive score of 209.5, tops on the team, but fell short to Tennessee Martin's Noel Meadows (210.5).

The Hornets will take on No. 2 seed Oklahoma State in the Reining quarterfinals on Friday (Apr. 19). The round begins at 8:35 a.m. Central Time.  

The semifinal round begins at 12:45 (CT) Friday and the championship in set for Saturday at 3:50 p.m.

Also today, the Delaware State Fences team fell to Sweet Briar in an eight-nine match-up  that was decided by total points. Each team had two winning rides, but the Vixens held an 845-832 points advantage.

Zoe Kirsch, riding on “Cartoon,” collected a point for the eighth-seeded Hornets with a score of 217. Sydney Wicklund was the other winner for DSU, riding “Ginger” to a score of 211.

The 13th seeded Delaware State Flat team was shut out by No. 4 SMU in the tournament today.
All-United Equestrian Conference First Team honoree Gabrielle Fournier had the top score for the Hornets at 199 aboard “Valducchy” in the Flat competition.

The Delaware State Horsemanship team has also been eliminated from the national tournament with a 3-1 loss to No. 7 seed TCU today. Kelsey McArthur captured the lone win for the 10th seeded Hornets with a score of 205 aboard “Joe.”  

Blayne Bell had the top score among the DSU Horsemanship riders at 217, but came up short against  Horned Frog Natalia DeVencenty at 220.5.
