HORNETS SPLIT TWIN-BILL WITH SPARTANS

Dover, Del. (Apr. 6, 2019) ---Delaware State had season-highs in runs and hits in a 16-6 victory over Norfolk State in game two of a MEAC doubleheader at Soldier Field today. The Spartans won the opener 7-3.

In the nightcap, Cole Garey and Miguel Rivera drove in three runs each, while Tommy Jordan and John Weglarz each had four hits to lead the Hornets' 20-hit attack.

Norfolk State opened the game two scoring with two runs off DSU starter Sean McGrath in the top of the first inning.

The Hornets answered with four runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead for good. Jared Gillis had a run-scoring double, while Garey singled in a first inning run. DSU also scored a first inning run on a sac fly by Todd Henry.

Delaware State tacked on three runs in the second inning to open up a 7-2 lead. Garey singled in two  runs and Rich Rountree doubled in a run in the inning.

Norfolk State scored four runs off McGrath in the fourth to pull to within 7-6.

The Hornets tacked on three runs in the fifth to stretch their lead to 10-6. Alex Vasquez singled in a run and another crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Mark Herron. DSU also scored a fifth inning run on a Norfolk State error. The Spartans committed five errors in the nightcap.

Delaware State scored four times in the seventh, highlighted by a two-run double by Rivera, to open up a 14-6 lead. Weglarz and Henry also singled in seventh inning runs.

The Hornets led 15-6 lead in the eighth inning when Jordan scored from third on a wild pitch to end the game due to the MEAC's 10-run rule.

Freshman Austin Warrington (1-4) threw 4.1 scoreless innings in relief, allowing just two hits while striking out five to earn the game two win.

In the opener, Norfolk State trailed 1-0 before scoring four unearned runs off Hornet starter Garrett Lawson in the fifth to take the lead for good. Delaware State committed six errors in the game one loss.  

The Hornets scored first with a run in the bottom of the fourth when Rivera doubled to lead off the inning and Gillis drove him home with a one-out two-base hit.

Caleb Ward had two-run double and Brandon Crosby singled in a run to highlight the Spartans' four run fifth. Ward was one-for-three with four RBI in the opener.

NSU added a run in the sixth to stretch its lead to 5-1.

DSU scored two runs in the sixth to pull closer. The first run of the inning scored on a ground out by Todd henry and Adrian Hill singled in the second run to cut the Spartans' lead to 5-3.

Norfolk State scored two insurance runs off the DSU bullpen in the eighth.

Garey and Weglarz had two hits each in the opener for the Hornets. Weglarz was six-for-10 in the doubleheader to raise his season average to .292. Garey is batting .300 for the year after collecting four hits in 10 at bats in the twin-bill.

Lawson (4-3) was tagged with the loss, while NSU starter Chase Anderson (3-2) was the winning pitcher in the opener.

The Hornets and Spartans will play the rubber game of the series on Sunday. The first pitch is set for 1:00p.m. at Soldier Field.
