Washington, D.C. (Apr. 3, 2019) --- The Delaware State softball team came out on the short end of a non-conference double-header at George Washington today.
The Colonials won the first game 6-5 in eight innings, and completed the sweep with a 6-2 victory in the nightcap.
In the opener, Jessica Lindquist singled in the winning run with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning for the Colonials. Pinch hitter Elena Shelepak, who doubled to lead off the inning, scored the winning run.
Delaware State trailed 4-0 after two innings, but battled back to take a 5-4 lead in the fifth.
The Hornets were down four when batting in the top of the third. Carissa Thorne singled to lead off the inning and advanced to third when Jordan Casey reached base on an error with one out. DSU had runners on third and second with two outs when Jade King doubled to right, scoring Thorne and Casey to cut the Colonials' lead to 4-2. Jaelyn Baker and Vanessa Barron each singled in runs later in the inning to tie the score.
The Hornets pulled ahead 5-4 when Baker doubled to lead off the fifth and scored on a two-out single to center by Alexis Roberson.
George Washington tied the score at 5-5 when Jenna Cone smacked a solo home run off Hornet starter Brianna Baker with two outs in the bottom of the sixth.
Roberson had three of Delaware State's 11 hits (three-for-four), while Jaelyn Baker and Thorne each had two hits and a RBI in four at bats.
Brianna Baker pitched the entire game for the Hornets, tossing 7.1 innings and allowing 13 hits and six runs (five earned), while striking out three to suffer the loss.
In the nightcap, Alessandra Ponce was three-for-three with a home run, double and two RBI to lead the Colonials.
Ponce had a leadoff double in the Colonials' two-run second inning and smacked a two-run home in GW's three-run third.
Delaware State opened the game two scoring with a first inning run. Aided by two GW errors, the Hornets loaded the bases before recording an out in the inning. DSU only scored one in the inning when Jordan Casey crossed the plate on a double play ground ball by Jaelyn Baker.
The Hornets trailed 6-1 before scoring their second run on a single by Barron in the sixth.
Delaware State returns to MEAC North action with a three-game series at Morgan State this weekend (Apr. 6-7). The Hornets and Bears will play a doubleheader on Saturday and close out the series with a single game on Sunday.
