Washington, D.C. (Mar. 31, 2019) --- Brianna Baker tossed a complete game, while Jasmine Melgoza, Jonah Cunnigan and Tiffany Diao drove in two runs each to lead Delaware State to a 9-2 MEAC softball victory over Howard today. The Hornets avoided a sweep in the series to improve to 6-18 overall and
3-3 in the MEAC. The Bison dropped their first division game of the season (3-1) and fell to 9-18 overall.
Howard took an early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Delaware State scored two in the top of the third to take the lead. Carissa Thorne reached base with one out in the third. After stealing second base, Thorne scored on a triple by Melgoza to tie the score. The Hornets grabbed a 2-1 lead when Melgoza crossed the plate on a bunt single by Cunnigan.
The Bison responded with a run in the bottom of the third to tie the score at 2-2.
Delaware State regained the lead for good with two runs in the fifth on run-scoring singles by Cunnigan and Jade King.
The Hornets got some breathing room with four runs in the sixth. Melgoza doubled in her second run of the game, while Cunnigan also picked up second RBI on a two-out single in the inning. Diao also singled in a sixth inning run and the Hornets' final run in the seventh.
Baker allowed five hits and the two Bison runs, while striking out one and walking one in seven innings.
The Hornets will play two at George Washington on Wed. (Apr. 3) before returning to MEAC action at Morgan State next weekend (Apr. 6-7).
