Washington, D.C. (Mar. 30, 2019) --- Delaware State had late leads in each game, but couldn't hold on in a doubleheader loss to Howard today at Nationals Academy.
The Hornets dropped the first game 6-4 before falling 8-5 in the nightcap.
In the opener, DSU led 4-2 before Howard four times in the bottom of the sixth to take the win. The Bison scored four runs in the fifth inning of game two to overcome a 5-4 deficit.
Delaware State opened the game one scoring with two runs in the top of the first on a two-run single by Vanessa Barron.
Howard tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the first off Hornet starter Brianna Baker.
DSU regained the lead 3-2 when Alexis Roberson singled to lead off the second and later scored on a sac fly by Jasmine Melgoza.
The Hornets opened up a 4-2 lead on a one-out single by Jonah Cunnigan in the top of the sixth.
Howard's Trinity Gibbs drove in the go-ahead runs on a two-run double off Baker in the bottom of the sixth.
Barron was two-for-four with the two RBI, while Melgoza, Roberson and Cunnigan also had two hits in the opener.
Delaware State also struck early in game two. Catcher Jaelyn Baker smacked a two-run homer in the bottom of the first to give the Hornets the early lead. Baker leads the team with two home runs this season.
After Howard tied the game with two in its half of the first, Cunnigan tripled in a run in the second to give the Hornets a 3-2 lead.
The Bison scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to pull ahead 4-3.
Delaware State took advantage of Howard miscues to regain the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth. Both runs crossed the plate on Bison errors, while the Hornets also took advantage of a wild pitch in the inning.
The Hornets committed two errors to aid in Howard's four-run fifth inning.
Cunnigan was two-for-three in game two to give her four hits in six at bats in the doubleheader.
The Hornets (5-18; 2-3 MEAC) and Bison (9-17; 3-0 MEAC) will close out the series with a single game on Sunday. Start time is 1:00 p.m. at Nationals Academy in Washington, D.C.
