Dover, Del. (Mar. 24, 2019) --- For the second game in a row, Delaware State could not overcome a big early deficit, falling to Coppin State 10-5 in the finale of a three-game series at Soldier Field this afternoon. The Eagles won the last two games of the series after the Hornets took the opener on Friday.
Corey Treyes had a three-run homer, while Derek Lohr , Eric Crossman and Conner Walker drove in two runs each to lead the Eagles.
Miquel Rivera drove in two runs and Mark Herron had two hits, including a homer, for the Hornets.
Coppin State scored first with three runs in the top of the second inning off Hornet starter Jeremy Carrow. A two-run double by Lohr was the big hit in the inning.
The Eagles tacked on five runs in the third off Carrow, highlighted by Treyes' three-run homer, to open up an 8-0 lead.
The Hornets got two back in the bottom of the third on a two-run double by Rivera. Tommy Jordan singled with two outs and bases empty in the inning and John Weglarz followed with a walk. Jordan and Weglarz scored on the two-base hit by Rivera.
DSU put two more runs on the board in the sixth to pull to within 8-4. Cole Garey doubled to lead off the inning and later scored when Jared Gillis reached base on a fielder's choice. Gillis scored the second run of the inning on a steal of home.
Coppin State opened up a 10-4 lead on a two-double by Walker in the seventh inning.
The Hornets scored their final run when Mark Herron led off the bottom of the seventh inning with his first DSU home run.
Carrow (0-2) pitched three innings for the Hornets, allowing 10 hits and eight runs to take the loss.
Coppin State starter Aaron Rea (2-2) threw six innings, giving up four hits and four runs, while striking out five get the win.
Delaware State (6-14) returns to action on Wed. (Mar. 27) at La Salle. Game time is 3:00 p.m. in Philadelphia. The Hornets return to MEAC action next weekend vs. Maryland-Eastern Shore. The games will be played at Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Md.
