Norfolk, Va. (Mar. 17. 2019) --- Jonathan Mahoney pitched a six-hit shutout to lead Norfolk State to a 9-0 MEAC North victory over Delaware State in the finale of a three-game series at Marty Miller Field today.
The Spartans swept the series to improve to 7-10 overall and 3-0 in the MEAC. The Hornets dropped their fourth straight to fall to 5-11 and 0-3.
Norfolk State catcher Kam Holland was two-for-four with six runs batted in on a grand slam and two-run double to lead the Spartans' 12-hit attack.
Catcher Adrian Hill has three singles in four at bats for the Hornets.
The Spartans opened the scoring with five runs in bottom of the second inning off Delaware State starter Jeremy Carrow. The first three batters in the inning reached base on two singles and a walk. Holland then launched a shot over the left field fence to clear the bases and put Norfolk State ahead 4-0. Norfolk State led 5-0 when Alsander Womack singled in a run with two outs in the inning.
Holland doubled in two more runs off Carrow in the third to push the Spartans' lead to 7-0.
Norfolk State scored single runs in the fourth and eighth innings to round out the scoring.
Hill had singles in the third, sixth and eighth innings to raise his season average to .318.
Also, the Hornets turned a 4-3-5 triple play on a pop out to second by James Deloatch in the Norfolk State fifth. Brandon Crosby, who was on third base and Holland on first were also out on the play.
Mahoney struck out six without allowing a walk for his first win of the season (1-2) for the Spartans. Carrow (0-1) was tagged with the loss for the Hornets.
DSU returns to action on the road at George Washington on Tuesday (Mar. 19). Game time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in Arlington, Va.
The Hornets will resume MEAC play with a three-game series at home against Coppin State next weekend (Mar. 22-24). Friday's series opener begins at 3:00 p.m. The teams will also play single games on Sat. (2:00 p.m.) and Sunday (1:00 p.m.) at Soldier Field.
