Dover, Del. (Mar. 2) --- The Delaware State Lady Hornets defeats the Morgan State Bears 62-57 on Saturday night at Memorial Hall. Delaware State improves to 6-19 overall; 4-10 in the conference.
Senior forward NaJai Pollard led the way with a game high 28 points and eight rebounds.
There were six ties and one lead change in the first quarter, as both teams matched each other point for point. The Lady Hornets did their damage by attacking the rim, they had 10 paint points in the quarter. While the Lady Bears scored their points primarily from the mid-range they also added six points from the free throw line. The game was tied at 15 after the first ten minutes of play. The Lady Hornets were able to create separation in the second quarter, outscoring the Lady Bears 19-13 to lead 34-28 heading into halftime.
Midway through the third quarter, Shonnyvelle Regalado made a jumper to extend their lead to double digits at 44-34. The Lady Bears responded with an 8-2 run at the end of the quarter and DSU lead only by four heading into the fourth quarter.
The Lady Hornets went on an 8-0 run to open the final quarter, the flurry was capped off by a jumper from NaJai Pollard with 5:39 left in the game.
Morgan State responded with a 13-4 run, which included two three-pointers, the second three-pointer from Ashia McCalla cut Delaware State's lead to just three points with 41 seconds left.
DSU was able to finish the game at the free throw line converting 4-of-6 from the charity stripe.
Delaware State shot 21-of-45 (46.7%) on field goal attempts, but just 1-of-9 (11.1%) on three-pointers. They added 19-of-29 (65.5%) from the free-throw line.
Shonnyvelle Regalado scored 10 points for the fourth time in the last six games. Regalado also had a season high five steals.
Lanayjha Ashe had 10 points as well (6-of-7 from the free throw line).
Morgan State made just 20-of-51 (39.2%) from the floor but shot an efficient 7-of-14 (50.0%) from beyond-the-arc. The Lady Bears also made 10-of-14 (71.4%) from the charity stripe.
Ashia McCalla led three Lady Bears in double figures with 18 points.
