Hampton, Va. (Mar. 1, 2019) --- Hampton scored five runs in its last two at bats to overcome a two run deficit in a 5-3 victory over Delaware State in game two of HU's Pirate Invitational Softball Tournament today.
The teams also played the opening game of the tournament, with Hampton coming out on top 9-0.
In game two, Delaware State scored single runs in the second and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead. Tiffany Diao singled in Vanessa Barron with the Hornets' second inning run, while Jaelyn Baker scored DSU's fourth inning run on an error after getting on base with a leadoff double.
Hampton tied the game with two runs in the fifth inning off Delaware State starter Brianna Baker. The Pirates tacked on three more runs off Baker in the sixth to open up a 5-2 lead.
The Hornets scored a run on a bases loaded walk with two outs in the top of the seventh to pull to within 5-3. The bases were still loaded when Taylor Leydig lined out to first to end the game.
Delaware State had a season-high 10 hits in the contest. Jasmine Melgoza, Jonah Cunnigan, Barron and Diao collected two hits each.
In the opener, Delaware State managed just four singles off two Hampton pitchers, including two by Melgoza, who was four-for-seven in the two games to raise her season average to .423.
The Pirates opened the scoring with three runs in the second inning and added two more in the third to take a 5-0 lead. Hampton closed out the scoring with four runs in the fourth.
The game was called after the Hornets batted in the fifth due to the eight-run rule.
Delaware State will face St. Peter's in the Pirate Invitational on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. On Sunday, the Hornets will face St. Peter's again (9:00 a.m.) and North Carolina Central (11:00 a.m.) to close out the tournament.
