THE CITADEL TOPS HORNETS IN SERIES FINALE

Charleston, S.C. (Feb. 17, 2019) --- Second baseman Tyler Corbitt was five-for-five with three runs scored and two batted in to lead The Citadel to a 9-3 victory over Delaware State in the finale of a three-game series at Joe Riley Park today. The Bulldogs won the last two games of the series after the Hornets took the opener on Friday.

The Citadel scored seven unanswered runs after DSU led 3-2 in the third inning.

Hornet right fielder Arthur Burrell was three-for-four with a run scored and a RBI today, giving him five  hits in the last two games.

Delaware State opened the scoring with a first-inning run off Citadel starter Dylan Spence. John Weglarz drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on a single by DSU fill-in starting pitcher Miguel Rivera before crossing the plate on fielder's choice by Jared Gillis.

The Citadel answered with two runs off Rivera in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead.

The Hornets regained the lead with two of their own in the top of the second. Mark Herron was walked to start the inning. He moved to second on a groundout by Tripp Kimmell. Burrell followed with a single to center to score Herron and tie the score at 2-2. Burrell advanced to third on an error by the Bulldogs. Weglarz followed with a groundout to first, with Burrell scoring on the play to give the Hornets a 3-2 lead in the second.

The Citadel scored two runs off Rivera in the third to regain the lead, 4-3 and combined for three runs off Hornet reliever Arthur Warrington in the fifth and sixth innings to open up a 7-3 lead.

Spence (0-1) threw five innings, allowing four hits and three runs, two earned, with six strikeouts and three walks tom earn the win for the Bulldogs.

Rivera (0-1) gave up five hits and four runs in four innings to take the loss.

Delaware State was outhit 12-7 in the game.

Freshmen relievers Robert Shorts (0.1 inn.), Zach Dale (1.0 inn.) and Jeremy Carrow (1.0 inn.) combined for 2.1 shutout innings with two strikeouts and no walks to close out the game for the Hornets.

Delaware State returns to action on Wednesday (Feb. 20) at Navy. Game time is 2:00 p.m. in Annapolis, Md.
