Charleston, S.C. (Feb. 16, 2019) --- Lefty Shane Connolly tossed a three-hit shutout to lead The Citadel to a 5-0 win over Delaware State at Riley Park this after. Connelly struck out three and walked two to help the Bulldogs even the three-game series at a game apiece.
The Hornets managed just six base runners in the game, including a one-out double by John Weglarz in the first inning, a leadoff single in the fourth by Arthur Burrell and a two-out single by Burrell in the eighth.
The Citadel opened the scoring with two, two-out runs off Delaware State starter Sean McGrath (sr.) in the second inning. McGrath retired the first two batters, but walked Andrew Judkins to extend the inning. J.D. Davis followed with a bloop single to right, with Judkins rounding the bases to score the first run of the game. The next batter, Tilo Skole, blooped a double to left field. Judkins advanced to third on the play, but continued home on a DSU error to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.
The Citadel added a run off McGrath in the third on a sac fly by Tyler Corbitt.
McGrath (0-1) allowed five hits and three runs, two earned, while striking out three and walking three in six innings in his first 2019 start.
The Bulldogs tacked on two runs in the eighth off Hornet freshman reliever Robert Shorts to close out the scoring.
Delaware State freshman Sean Bradley pitched a scoreless seventh in his collegiate debut, retiring the side in order.
The Hornets and Bulldogs will play the rubber game of the series on Sunday. Start time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Riley Park.
