The Game
Delaware State (3-12; 1-3 MEAC) begins a three-game road swing with a visit to defending MEAC regular season champion Bethune-Cookman. The Lady Hornets notched their first MEAC win of the season in their last outing, topping visiting North Carolina Central 71-61 on Jan. 14. NaJai Pollard (sr.) led the way with a monster performance, topping all players with 31 points and 15 rebounds. She was 13-for-24 from the field and perfect on five free throw attempts in the contest to highlight her seventh double-double of the season. Pollard is No. 1 in the MEAC and sixth among all NCAA Div. I players in scoring at 22.7 points per game. She has topped the 30-point mark in five games this season, including a 36-point performance vs. Robert Morris on Dec. 18. A Preseason All-MEAC First Team selection, Pollard is also second in the league in rebounding (10.6 pg) and third in field goal percentage (.486) this season. Lanayjha Ashe (jr.) is second on the Lady Hornets and 11th in the MEAC in scoring at 12.7 points per game. Ashe is also among the league leaders in assists, free throw and three-point shooting.
Bethune-Cookman (8-7; 1-2 MEAC) is off to a slow start in the 2018-19 MEAC race. After winning their conference opener vs. North Carolina Central (67-50), the Lady Wildcats have dropped their last two league games, 61-40 at Howard, and 57-50 at Norfolk State. Angel Golden and Amaya Scott led BCU with 11 points each against Norfolk State in the last outing. Golden, the Preseason MEAC Player-of-the-Year, is second in the league in scoring at 18.5 points per game.
The Series
This is only scheduled contest between the teams this season. Bethune-Cookman has won the last three meetings, although Delaware State holds a 36-29 lead in the all-time series. The Wildcats won the only 2017-18 contest 68-60 in Dover, Del. DSU's Pollard led all players with 28 points and 13 rebounds in the last meeting against Bethune-Cookman.
