New York, N.Y. (Jan. 13, 2019) --- Delaware State’s men won two events en route to a fifth place finish at the annual HBCU Battle Indoor Track & Field competition at the New York Armory this weekend.
DSU took first place in the 4 x 200-meter relay to earn 10 points for the Hornets. The Delaware State team of Julian Brown, Kendall Leach, Julius Allen and Michael Mills posted a winning time of one-minute-29.91-seconds, just ahead of second place Bowie State (1:30.01).
Tre’ Johnson recorded the Hornets’ other first place finish with a victory worth 10 points in the triple jump. Johnson won the event with a top leap of 14.24 meters (46-feet-8.75 inches). DSU’s Forrest Booker was third in the triple jump at 12.93 meters (42’5.25”) to earn six points.
Hasan Gil also collected six points for DSU for a third place performance in the weight throw with a top attempt of 15.03 meters (49’3.75”).
Karim Beatty and Hasan Gil each posted fifth place finishes to add to the Hornets’ point total.
Gil was fifth in the mile run with a time of 4-minutes-41.78-seconds, while Beatty gave DSU three top five finishers in the triple jump with a top throw of 12.36 meters (40’6.75”). He also earned three points for the Hornets with a sixth place finish in the long jump (6.49 m).
Delaware State totaled 49 points in the 13-team competition.
Hampton was first in the HBCU Battle team standings with 112 points. Morgan State was second with 90 points, followed Bowie State and Coppin State in a tie for third with 51 points each.
