The Game
Delaware State (2-8) closes out 2018 with its final non-conference game of the season,
visiting Virginia Commonwealth of the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Lady Hornets are trying to snap a four-game slide. DSU is coming off a 75-63 loss to Marshall on Saturday. The Lady Hornets suited up just eight players in the game. NaJai Pollard led DSU with 30 points, including a season high three made three-pointers. She also recorded 14 rebounds, four blocks, two assists, and one steal. Pollard is the leading scorer in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and top five among all NCAA Division I players at 24.3 points per game this season. She has combined for 66 points in the last two games and has 1591 points in her career to rank fifth on the school's all-time list.
Keke Barber added 10 points (including 3 three-pointers), three rebounds, two steals, one assist, and one block in the Marshall contest, while Lanayjha Ashe and Shonnyvelle Regalado combined for 18 points and seven assists in the game.
Virginia Commonwealth (7-5) snapped a three-game losing streak with a 54-48 victory over North Carolina A&T in its last outing on Dec. 21. The Rams are holding opponents to 52.3 points per game this season. VCU forced NCA&T to just 27.3% shooting in the game (15-for-55). Tera Reed and Sydnei Archie led the Rams with 10 points each in the last outing. For the season, Reed is the team's top scorer at 12.3 points per game. Taya Robinson is second on the Rams at 10.8 points per game, while Archie is the leading rebounder at 5.1 per contest.
The Series
This is the sixth meeting between the teams, but first in 26 years. Virginia Commonwealth holds a 3-2 series lead. The Rams won the last encounter 81-50 in the Lady Hornets' 1992-93 opener. Delaware State last defeated VCU 81-64 during the 1989-90 season.
