Cincinnati, OH (Dec. 9) --- Delaware State (2-5) falls to Xavier (7-1), 80-59 on Sunday afternoon.
NaJai Pollard reached the 1500-point milestone for her career (she is now at 1,504 points – sixth most in school history).
The Musketeers started the game with a 9-2 run, the Lady Hornets responded with an 8-1 run. Keke Barber provided six of the eight points during their spurt. Barber scored 13 of her 15 points in the first half. Xavier took control with a 13-5 run, ending the quarter with a 23-15 lead. The Musketeers increased their lead in the second quarter and DSU would head into halftime with a 42-29 deficit.
The Lady Hornets trailed by 18 with 5:04 left in the third quarter. Delaware State guard Tylea Galloway started a 11-3 run to cut the deficit down to ten points with 3:16 left in the third quarter. The run was sparked by a layup after executing a beautiful pick and roll with NaJai Pollard. During that run Shonnyvelle Regalado, and Yazmin Batch both made a three-pointer. Delaware State trailed 63-51 heading into the fourth quarter.
Neither team scored for the first 4:57 of the fourth quarter, Regalado was able to break the scoring drought by making two free-throws, cutting the deficit back down to ten points. Xavier pulled away late with 17-6 run effectively ending the game.
Delaware State made 23-of-59 (39.0%) field goal attempts, 6-of-20 (30.0%) on three-point attempts, and 7-of-8 (87.5%) on free throw attempts.
Lady Hornets forward NaJai Pollard recorded 13 points, five rebounds, two assists, and one block.
Lanayjha Ashe added 10 points, seven assists, four rebounds, and one block.
Xavier shot 28-of-60 (46.7%) from the field, 11-of-24 (45.8%) from beyond-the-arc, and 13-of-20 (65.0%) from the free throw line.
