Dover, Del. (Dec. 8, 2018) ---Delaware State hit less than a-third of its shots from the field in an 81-54 men’s basketball loss to Jacksonville State in Memorial Hall this evening. The Gamecocks won their fifth game in a row to improve to 5-3 this season, while the Hornets have lost four of their last five to fall to 2-8.

DSU was 18-for-57 from the field (31.6%), including eight-of-27 on three-point shots (29.6%) in the contest.  Jacksonville State shot 50.8 percent for the game, hitting on 31 of its 61 shots from the floor.

Jason Burnell and Christian Cunningham recorded double-doubles to lead the Gamecocks. Burnell led all players with 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Cunningham added 10 points and 10 boards. Jamall Gregory chipped in 14 points for JSU.

Saleik Edwards was high scorer for Delaware State with 19 points, highlighted by five three-point field goals (5-for-10).  Edwards is 11-for-21 on three-point attempts in the last three games (52.4%).  He has 30 three-pointers in 10 games this season after knocking down 18 as a junior during the 2017-18 campaign.  

Kevin Larkin was the only other Delaware State player in double-figures with 10 points.

The score was 7-7 before Jacksonville State began to pull away midway through the first half. Burnell capped off a 13-3 run with a lay-up to give the Gamecocks a 20-10 lead with 10:58 left in the half.

Jacksonville State led by as much as 13 in the half before settling for a 34-22 advantage at the break.

The Hornets hit on just seven of their 33 shots from the field 21.2% in the first 20 minutes.

Jacksonville State scored the first eight points of the second half, and pulled ahead 42-22 on basket by Marlon Hunter with 17:12 left to play.

The Gamecocks were ahead by many as 32 points in the second half.

Jacksonville State won the rebound battle 48-26, while the Hornets committed 16 turnovers to 20 for the Gamecocks.

Delaware State will take off for final exams before returning to action on Dec. 19 at the University of Delaware. Game time is 7:00 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark.
