Dover, Del. (Dec. 3, 2018) --- Kevin Larkin had 40 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and four steals to lead Delaware State to a 102-66 victory over Cairn in Memorial Hall this evening.

The Hornets snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 2-7 this season. The Division III Highlanders had a two-game win streak halted to fall to 4-4.

Larkin, a Sussex Tech (Del.) High School product who transferred to Delaware State from Niagara this summer, was 17-for-26 from the field, including three-of-nine on three-point shots. His 40 points were the most by a Hornet since Amere May matched the figure in a 104-92 win at Coppin State on March 5, 2015.

Larkin’s 11 boards marked his third double-figure rebound game in five appearances with the Hornets. His six assists and four steals were also career highs.

He has recorded double-doubles in each of the last two games.  Larkin had 13 points and 11 rebounds vs. St. Bonaventure in the previous contest on Dec. 1.

Ameer Bennett added 15 points on six-of-eight shooting from the field, while Jonathan Mitchell came off the bench to hit six of his nine shots to highlight a 14-point performance for the Hornets. Mitchell was also second on the team with eight rebounds.

Delaware State led 19-18 before taking control of the game. The Hornets scored the next 15 points, capped off by a Fahim Jenneto lay-up off an assist from Larkin, to open up a 34-18 first half lead.

The Hornets held a 47-32 advantage at the half. Larkin topped all players with 15 points at intermission.

DSU opened up a 20-point lead, 79-59, on a three-pointer by Larkin at the 9:45 mark of the second half.  His third three-pointer of the game gave the Hornets an 89-59 edge with 6:34 left to play.

Delaware State hit the century mark when Mitchell hit two free throws to open up its biggest lead, 101-61, with 3:39 to go in the game.

The last time DSU hit the 100-point mark was on Nov. 11, 2016 in a 103-56 victory over Clarks Summitt. The Hornets’ 36-point victory was also their biggest since the 2016 Clark Summitt contest.

Delaware State won the second half 55-34.

The Hornets shot a season-best  55.4 percent from the field in the game, hitting on 41 of their 74 shots from the field, including 10-of-30 from three –point territory.

Delaware State also recorded a season-high 24 assists in the game.

Jesse Rivera was high scorer for Cairn with 13 points.

The Hornets are also home for their next contest this Saturday against Jacksonville State. Game time is 5:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
