Dover, Del. (Nov. 20) --- The Lady Hornets fell to the Delaware Blue Hens 82-77, at Memorial Hall on Tuesday night. NaJai Pollard had a season high 31 points, 15 rebounds (also a season high), three blocks, two steals, and two assists.

The Lady Hornets for the first time this season, did not start the game slow. The reason for it was Seniors NaJai Pollard and Keke Barber combined for 13 of the teams 15 points in the first quarter. Neither team was able to get any separation in the first ten minutes; there were five ties and three lead changes. However, the Lady Hornets trailed 17-15 heading into the second quarter.

The score continued to switch hands, until DSU went on a 17-6 run, highlighted by a three-pointer from Lanayjha Ashe, giving the Lady Hornets a 36-28 lead with 1:46 left in the half. NaJai Pollard hit a jumper as time expired to take a 38-32 lead into halftime. Pollard recorded 17 points and eight rebounds during the first half of play.

“NaJai (Pollard) this is the best she’s played all year. Caputo said after the game. We challenged her in many areas and she rose to the challenge today, she showed that she is one of the best players in the region... If it wasn’t for NaJai we wouldn’t have been in this game.”

The Blue Hens came out of halftime on a 21-8 run, and led 56-46 with 1:57 left in the third quarter. The Lady Hornets responded with a 7-0 run (two jumpers by NaJai Pollard and a three-pointer by Keke Barber) to cut the deficit to just three points.

Delaware made two free throws extending their lead to five points heading into the final quarter.

The Blue Hens went on another run. A 18-4 flurry gave the Blue Hens a 19-point lead at 79-60, their largest lead of the game.

Delaware State responded with a 13-3 run of their own. They cut the deficit to just five, with 26 seconds left in the fourth quarter, after Keke Barber skied through the air to grab an offensive rebound before finishing with a layup off the glass.  

The Blue Hens would make three free throws to end the run and put the game out of reach.

Delaware State shot 28-of-60 (46.7%) from the field, 6-of-18 (33.3%) from three-point range and 15-of-27 (55.6%) from the charity stripe.

Delaware went 32-of-68 (47.1%) from the field, 8-of-19 (42.1%) from beyond-the-arc, and 13-of-15 (86.7%) from the free-throw line.
