Brooklyn, N.Y. (Aug. 31, 2018) --- The Delaware State volleyball team opened the St. Francis Brooklyn Terrier Tournament with straight set losses to Cal State Fullerton and Bucknell today. The Cal State Fullerton scores were 25-15, 25-9 and 25-14

The play of senior Mia Taula was a bright spot in the match for the Hornets. Taula topped all players with 20 digs, while freshman Devin Ruble had a team-high five kills and six digs.

Fullerton’s Madeline Schneider posted a match-high 13 kills. The Titans recorded 36 kills and posted a .235 hitting percentage in the contest.

In the Bucknell match, Delaware State dropped the first two sets, 25-12 and 25-15, but put up a tough fight in a 25-23 loss in set three.

Ruble again led the Hornets with nine kills, while Sydney Armbrister (sr.) tallied eight. DSU’s Milexa Cardona (fr.) had a career-high 25 assists to top all players, while Taula recorded a match-high 12 digs.

In the third set, Bucknell capped off a 5-0 run with a kill by Blake Buchholz to open up a 17-12 lead.

The Hornets responded by scoring five of the next six points, and pulled to within 18-17 on a Bucknell error.

Delaware State was a point away from defeat, trailing 24-21, but scored the next two points on kills by Armbrister to stay alive. Bucknell won the next point to end the match.

DSU (0-5) has two more chances to capture its first win this weekend. The Hornets will take on NJIT and host St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday to close out the tournament.

Delaware State will play its 2018 home opener on Wednesday against American. The match is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
