Dover, Del. (Aug. 24, 2018) --- The Delaware State volleyball team showed some promising signs in a season-opening 3-0 loss to Missouri at the James Madison Tropical Smoothie Tournament today. The scores were 25-16, 25-16 and 25-14.
Dariana Hollingsworth led Mizzou with 11 kills, while teammate Leketor Member-Meneh added nine. Andrea Fuentes had a match-high 16 assists and Jaden Newsome chipped in with 15 for the Tigers.
Mayah Ngundam (so.) and freshman Caroline Rakoski led the Hornets with five kills each. Freshman Sydney Sheppard had a team-high 10 assists, while Mia Taula led all players with 12 digs for DSU.
In the opening set, Delaware State scored the first two points and only trailed 10-9 after a Mizzou error. The Tigers scored eight of the next nine points, and pulled ahead 18-10 on an ace by Riley Sents to cap a 5-0 run.
Delaware State could pull no closer than six points the rest of the set.
In set two, the Hornets led 5-3 before Missouri scored five of the next six points to pull ahead.
DSU was trailing 13-10 before scoring the next three points to tie the set. Kiera Holtzclaw recorded a kill and Mizzou committed attack errors on the next two plays to allow the Hornets to even the set at 13-13.
The Tigers only led 15-14, but opened up a little breathing room with a 5-1 run to pull ahead by five (20-15).
The Hornets scored just one point the rest of the set.
Missouri scored the first five points, and opened up a 7-1 lead on a kill by Kylie Deberg to start the third set . The Tigers opened up their biggest lead of the set, 19-6, on a kill by Tyanna Omazic.
Missouri had 39 kills and just 11 errors on 83 attempts for a .337 attack percentage. Delaware State posted a -.049 percentage, recording 20 kills and 24 errors on 82 attempts.
Delaware State will continue tournament play with Saturday matches against host James Madison at 12:30 pm and Fairfield at 5:00 p.m.
