Lexington, Va. (Aug. 23, 2018) --- The Delaware State women’s soccer team hung tough with undefeated Virginia Military Institute for more than 86 minutes before allowing three late scores in  4-0 loss to the Keydets at Patchin Field this afternoon.

VMI improved to 3-0, while the Hornets are winless in three contests this season.

Once again, Delaware State fell behind early in the match. The Keydets scored their first goal on a header by Sierra Brewer off a cross from Whitney Edwards-Roberson in the 10th minute.

VMI maintained the one-goal lead for the next 77 minutes before striking again late in the match.

Kiley Cropper gave the Keydets a 2-0 lead after firing a shot past Delaware State goal keeper Leslie Fazio in the 87th minute.

Less than a minute later, VMI added to its lead when the ball caromed off a Delaware State player and into the net for an own goal.

VMI struck again 18 seconds later when Sam Franklin scored from 25 yards out off the crossbar, giving the Keydets three goals in a one-minute-13-second span.

Delaware State had five shots in the match, including on goal attempts by Alyssa Coustenis and Daijah Norris. Fazio recorded a season-high eight saves, although the Hornets were outshot 28-5 in the match.

DSU will play its 2018 Alumni Stadium opener in its next match this Sunday (Aug. 26) against Temple. The first competition on the new stadium turf is set for 2:00 p.m.
