Dover, Del. (Apr. 28, 2018) --- The Delaware State softball team put up a tough fight against one of top teams in the America East Conference, but came up short in a doubleheader sweep by the University at Albany at the DSU softball complex today. The Great Danes won the first contest 8-4 and completed the sweep with a 6-1 victory in game two. Albany, the No. 2 team in the America East with a 9-4 record, improved to 23-13 overall with today's sweep.
In the opener, Chelsea Henige was 2-for-4 with three runs batted in while Kelly Barkevich and Donna Conrad drove in two runs each to lead the Great Danes.
Delaware State trailed 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Desiree Moreno hit a solo homer and Vanessa Washington added a two-run shot later in the inning to cut deficit to a run.
Washington has 33 career home runs, tying for second with Patty Brown (2000-03) on the Hornets' all-time. Catrina Ansbach (2004-07) is team's all-time leader with 44 homers. Moreno and Washington are tied for the team lead with eight home runs this season.
Albany added three insurance runs in the sixth inning to seal the game one victory.
Sabrina Quarles had two hits, including a triple, in the opener for the Hornets.
In the nightcap, Delaware State only trailed 3-1 before the Great Danes got some breathing room with three runs in the top of the seventh inning.
The Hornets left 10 runners on base and were plagued by four errors in game two.
DSU scored its only run in the nightcap when Jalen Wilcher was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the second inning.
Kelly Spear drove in three runs, while Katie Falotico hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning for the Great Danes.
Delaware State fell to 11-31 this season with today's losses.
The teams will wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday. Start time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. The Hornets will salute their four 2018 seniors before the game.
