Salisbury, Md. (Mar. 31, 2018) --- Delaware State scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning and added two more in the ninth to defeat Maryland-Eastern Shore 8-5 in game one of a MEAC North doubleheader at Perdue Stadium today.
The Hornets snapped a 20-game skid and recorded their first MEAC win of the season in the contest. MDES won the nightcap 2-0
Freshman Miguel Rivera had two hits and two runs batted in to lead DSU's 12-hit attack.
Darnell Maisonet, Jared Gillis and John Weglarz also tallied two hits each for the Hornets in the opener.
In game one, Delaware State opened the scoring with a first inning run on a sacrifice fly by Cole Garey.
The Hornets added four runs in the second to pen up a 5-0 lead. Rivera had a two-run single, while Maisonet and Gillis also singled in second inning runs.
The Hawks stormed back with a run in the third and four in fourth to tie the game at 5-5.
The score was still tied when Delaware State scored a run in the seventh to regain the lead. Maisonet singled to lead off the inning and later scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Daryl Wilson.
The Hornets added two insurance runs in the ninth on bases loaded walks by Weglarz and Todd Henry.
Sean McGrath pitched the first seven innings to earn the win (2-5), while Travis Dill tossed two scoreless innings in relief to collect his first save of the season for the Hornets.
In the seven-inning nightcap, Toby Hoskins tossed the three-hit shutout to lead the Hawks.
Both MDES runs, scored in the first inning, were unearned. The Hornets committed four errors in the contest.
