Salisbury, Md. (May 18, 2017) --- Delaware State is proving to be a tough out in the 2017 MEAC Baseball Tournament. After dropping its tournament opener, the Hornets have won their last two games, including a 7-4 victory over Florida A&M Thursday evening to join three other teams still fighting for the championship.
DSU will look to continue its tournament run against North Carolina A&T in an elimination game on Friday. Start time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
In addition to avenging a 12-2 loss to Florida A&M in its tourney opener on Wednesday, Delaware State eliminated the Rattlers from the field.
DSU freshman starter Garrett Lawson (6-4) struck out a career-high nine batters in 6.2 innings to earn the win.
The Hornets scored five runs with two outs in the fourth inning to take control of the game. Florida A&M led 2-1 before DSU came to bat in the inning.
Jared Gillis started the rally with a one-out single. Todd Henry followed with a single to put runners at second and first. Delaware State had men and third and first with two outs when Evan Regez singled to center to score Gillis, tying the game at 2-2. The next batter, Kwestin Smith, singled down the right field line. Regez and Tommy Jordan scored on the hit to give the Hornets a 4-2 lead. Ciaran Devenney and Jaylen Zielecki added run-scoring hits in the inning to stretch the lead to four.
Delaware State opened up a 7-2 lead when Regez singled in his second run of the game in the fifth inning.
Florida A&M got to Lawson for two runs in the seventh to pull to within 7-4. The Rattlers had runners at third and first with two outs in the seventh when Travis Dill relieved Lawson on the mound. Dill recorded the final out in the seventh inning on a pop up and retired the Rattlers in order in the eighth to preserve the Hornets' three-run lead.
Darrien Ragins pitched a scoreless ninth inning, striking out the last batter, to record his second save of the tournament and MEAC-best 11th this season.
Regez, Smith and Devenney each were 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Gillis and Henry also had two hits for the Hornets.
Regez is 5-for-10 with five RBI and three runs scored in DSU's three tournament games.
The Hornets outhit Florida A&M 13-5 in the contest.
