Baltimore, Md. (Apr. 2, 2017) --- Delaware State held seven-run leads on two occasions before holding off Coppin State for an 11-9 victory and a sweep in the three-game MEAC series today.

Freshman catcher Desiree Moreno was 2-for-4 with four runs batted in, while Dani Velez and Mika Lumsden had two hits and three RBI each to lead the Hornets’ 14-hit attack.

Moreno was 6-for-10 with a home run, three doubles, a triple and eight RBI in the series. She has stretched her team-leading RBI total to 17 and climbed to second on the Hornets in batting at .282 this season.

In addition, she has hit safely in each of the last six games, batting .500 (10-for-20) during the span.

Coppin State opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the second inning off DSU starter Alexis Goldsby.

The Hornets answered with six runs in the top of the third to take the lead for good. Micaela Cummings doubled to lead off the inning. She was on third with two outs when Lumsden singled to right center to score Cummings with the Hornets' first run of the game. After Khaliyah Flournory walked to put runners on second and first, Moreno doubled to right center to drive in both runs and tie the game at 3-3.

Vanessa Washington then drew a walk, giving DSU runners at second and first for Velez, who smacked a three-run homer over the fence in left field to put the Hornets ahead 6-3.

Delaware State stayed hot in the fourth inning, scoring four times to open up a 10-3 lead. Moreno had her second two-run double of the game, while Lumsden and Washington singled home runners in the inning.

Moreno also leads the Hornets with eight doubles this season.

DSU scored its final run in the fifth to open up an 11-4 lead.

Coppin State made things interesting with a four runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to pull to within two runs.    

The Eagles had the potential tying runs on base in the seventh, but Hannah Shields recorded the final out on a grounder to seal the win.

Washington, Flournory and Sabrina Quarles also had two hits in the game for the Hornets.

Delaware State improved to 7-1 in the MEAC North (8-18 overall). The Hornets are seeking their fourth straight MEAC North title.

DSU returns to action with a non-conference doubleheader against Drexel at home on Tuesday (Apr. 4). Game one begins at 2:00 at the Hornets’ Nest on the Delaware State campus.

The Hornets return to MEAC action next weekend with a three-game series at Hampton
