Villanova, Pa. (Mar. 29, 2017) --- Villanova pitchers allowed a total of six hits in a doubleheader sweep of Delaware State at the VU Softball Complex today.

The Wildcats won the first game 4-1 and completed the sweep with a 6-2 victory in the nightcap.

 In the opener, Villanova starter Jordan Prutzer threw 5.1 innings no-hit innings, striking out five and walking one. Wildcat reliever Gabby Wenn finished the game, allowing two hits and Delaware State’s lone run.

Brittany Husk was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI to lead Villanova’s eight-hit attack.

The Hornets trailed 4-0 before getting their first hit and lone run in the seventh inning. Delaware State was down to its last out when Desiree Moreno doubled to left center to break up the no-hitter and keep the game alive. After Dani Velez was hit by a pitch, Sabrina Quarles singled to left to drive in Moreno for DSU’s lone runoff the game.

Starter Alexis Goldsby (1-1) suffered the game one loss for the Hornets.

In the nightcap, Villanova’s Brette Lawrence threw six shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out seven.

Natalia Segovia had three hits and two RBI, while Caroline Jones also drove in two to lead Villanova’s  game two offense.

Delaware State was down 5-0 before Jasmine Melgoza doubled in Kayleigh Berry and Micaela Cummings for the Hornets’ two runs with two out in the fifth.

Starting pitcher Hannah Shields (3-8) was tagged with the loss for DSU.

The Hornets return to MEAC North play with a three-game series at Coppin State in Baltimore this weekend. The teams will play two on Saturday (Apr. 1) beginning at 1 p.m. and wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday at noon.

Delaware State is second in the MEAC North at 4-1, just behind Hampton front runner Hampton (3-0).
