Dover, Del. (Mar. 2, 2017) --- DeAndre Haywood, playing in his final home game, led all players with 20 points and DeVaughn Mallory had 10 points and a career-best 14 rebounds to lead Delaware State to a 66-56 MEAC victory over Howard in the regular season finale for both teams in Memorial Hall this evening.

The Hornets snapped a three-game losing streak to close out the regular season with a 10-21 overall record and 7-9 mark in the MEAC. Howard finished the regular season at 7-22 and 5-11.

Kavon Waller added 13 points, highlighted by three three-point field goals (3-6), and Devin Morgan 12 for the Hornets.

Solomon Mangham was Howard’s high scorer with 18 points on six three-point field goals (6-for-13), while James Miller came off the bench to tally 16 for the Bison.

Haywood nailed a three-point shot with five seconds left in the first half to give Delaware State a 29-28 lead at the break.

Morgan hit two three-point shots to highlight the Hornets’ 8-0 run to start the second half. His second three-pointer gave DSU a 37-28 lead with 17:23 left to play.

Howard scored 12 of the next 16 points, and pulled to within 41-40 on a follow-up basket by Chuck Smith at the 12:10 mark of the second half.

The Hornets outscored the Bison 15-6 over the next eight minutes, and opened up their first double-digit lead of the game, 56-46, on a three-point shot by Haywood with 4:12 remaining.

Howard could get no closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Each team shot 37.7% from the field in the contest.

Delaware State hit 23 of its 61 shots from the floor, including eight-of-18 on three-point attempts (44.4%).

Howard was successful on 20-of-53 shot attempts, but only eight-of-26 from beyond the arc (30.8%).

The Hornets were 12-of-17 at the free throw line, while the Bison attempted 12 free throws, hitting eight.

Delaware State held a 45-30 advantage in rebounding, highlighted by a 19-8 edge in offensive boards.

The Hornets will next see action in the MEAC Tournament in Norfolk, Va., next week. DSU was ninth in the league standings entering tonight’s action.

The MEAC is expected to announce its 2017 tournament pairings on Friday.

… Waller has at least one three-pointer in 23 consecutive games and three-or-more triples in 12 contests this season.

…Morgan has 85 three-pointers this season, the fourth-best single-season mark in team history. The record is 91 by Tim Anderson (1989-90) and Jahsha Bluntt (2005-06).

…Mallory’s double-double was the second of his career.

… The Hornets were 4-7 at home this season, including 2-6 vs. MEAC opponents.
