Dover, Del. (Feb. 20, 2017) --- Delaware State was outscored 21-4 during a six-minute late second half stretch of a 65-54 loss to Morgan State in Memorial Hall this evening.

The Hornets dropped their second game in a row to fall to 9-20 overall and 6-8 in the MEAC. The Bears won their second straight to improve to 12-14 and 9-4. Morgan State also avenged a 56-45 loss to Delaware State on Feb. 11 in Baltimore, Md.

Devin Morgan capped off a 10-1 DSU run with a three-pointer to give the Hornets a 44-41 lead with 8:13 left in the second half.

Morgan State responded with a 10-2 run of its own, and opened up a 51-46 advantage on two free throws by Phillip Carr with 5:08 left to play.

After the Hornets  pulled to within 51-48, the Bears ran off the next 11 points to take control of the game. Carr closed out the run with a three-point play to give Morgan State a 62-48 lead at the 2:15 mark of the second half.

Delaware State hit just one of eight shots from the floor and committed two turnovers during the Morgan State spurt.

Carr led all players with 16 points (8-10 FTs) and seven rebounds in the game. Tiwian Kendley added 12 points for the Bears.

Morgan was the only Delaware State player in double figures with 11 points. He also had a game-high four assists.

DeAndre Haywood and Mahir Johnson were second on the Hornets with nine points each. Johnson, playing for the first time since Jan. 28 (seven games), was 4-for-6 from the field and hit his only free throw attempt in 12 minutes on the floor.

Morgan State led 25-23 at the half.

The Hornets were 20-for-51 from the field (39.2%), including 5-of-19 from three-point territory (26.3%), in the contest.

Morgan State shot 42.9% for the game, connecting on 24-of-56 field goal attempts and two three-pointers on 14 tries (14.3%).

The Bears held a big rebound advantage, 43-26. Morgan State had 19 second chance points to four for Delaware State.

The Hornets will also play their final two regular season games at home, including a Saturday (Feb. 25) visit from UMES. Game time is 4:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall.

DSU will wrap up the regular season at home against Howard on Mar. 2 (7:30 p.m.)

… The Hornets are 1-5 in MEAC home games and 5-3 on the road in conference play this season

… DSU’s Kavon Waller extended his streak with at least one three-pointer to 21 games.  He has hit a three-point shot in 28 of the Hornets’ 29 games this season.

 … Devin Morgan has 80 three-point field goals this season, the fourth-best mark in team history. The record is 91, shared by Tim Anderson (1989-90) and Jahsha Bluntt (2005-06).
