Iowa City, IA (Dec. 22, 2016) --- Delaware State hit just five-of-33 first half shots and never recovered in an 89-57 loss to Iowa at Carver-Hawkeye Arena this evening. The Hawkeyes won their fifth straight game to improve to 8-5, while the Hornets lost their third in a row to fall to 3-11.

Iowa countered Delaware State’s 15.2% first half shooting by hitting 14 of its 27 shots (51.9%) in the opening frame en route to a 43-20 lead at the break.

Devin Morgan was the only Delaware State player to score in double-figures with a game-high 24 points, highlighted by four three-point field goals, and perfect shooting on six free throw attempts.

Peter Jok led three Iowa players in double-figures with 17 points. Ahmad Wagner added 12 and Isaiah Moss 10 for the Hawkeyes.

Iowa jumped out to an 11-2 lead less than four minutes into the game and pulled ahead 39-11 on two free throws by Cordell Pemsi with 5:35 to go before halftime.

The Hawkeyes led by as many as 35 points in the second half.

Delaware State was 16-for-66 from the field (24.2%) and just six-of-24 (25.0%) on three-point shots for the game.

The Hawkeyes shot 56.9% in the contest (29-for-51), including 8-of-20 from beyond the arc (40.0%). Iowa shot a blistering 62.5% in the second half, while outscoring the Hornets 46-37 after the break.

The Hornets will have a few days off before a trip to the University Hawai’i to take on the Rainbow Warriors on Dec. 30 in Honolulu. Game time is 1 a.m. Eastern (Dec. 29 at 8 p.m. in Hawai’i).


…Delaware State won the rebound battle 40-39. DSU’s Mrdjan Gasevic led all players with a career-high 10 rebounds in the game.

… Morgan raised his free throw percentage to .875 (28-for-32) this season

… Kavon Waller was one-for-three on three-point attempts in the contest, giving him at least one three-ball in 13 of the Hornets’ 14 games this season. Waller is shooting .537 (36-67) on three-point shots this year.  

… DeVaughn Mallory and Demola Onifade fouled out of the game for the Hornets.   

Delaware State men's basketball
