Dover, Del. (Dec. 10, 2016) --- Kavon Waller tied a school-record with eight three-point field goals on nine attempts to lead Delaware State to a 92-69 win over Keystone in Memorial Hall this afternoon.
Waller nailed his first eight three-point shots to tie the team record first set by Marty Bailey during a MEAC Tournament contest on Mar. 7, 2000. The junior forward had a chance to break the record, but missed his final three-point attempt with 12 seconds remaining in the game.
Waller scored a career-high 26 points on 9-for-11 shooting from the field in the contest.
Waller’s performance overshadowed standout games by Hornet sophomores DeVaughn Mallory and Devon Morgan.
Mallory recorded his first career double-double, scoring a personal-best 18 points on 9-for-13 shooting and grabbing 13 rebounds, also a career-high.
Morgan also posted his first collegiate double-double, scoring 16 points, highlighted by four three-point field goals, and dishing out a career-high 10 assists.
Waller, Mallory and Morgan combined for 60 of the Hornets’ 92 points. Ten of the 12 players who appeared for DSU scored in the game.
The Hornets set a team record with 15 three-pointers on 30 attempts in the game, smashing the previous record of 14, occurring on three occasions, the last on Feb. 14, 2015.
Delaware State was tops in the MEAC with a .376 three-point percentage entering the game. The Hornets improved to .392 (91-for-232) following today’s performance.
DSU led 37-30 at the break, but outscored Keystone 55-39 in the second half. DSU was 22-for-38 from the field (57.9%), including 9-of-17 from three-point range (52.9%) in the final 20 minutes.
Delaware State also had season highs in rebounds (46) and assists (24) in today’s contest.
Mark Gilliam led three Keystone players in double-figures with 16 points, while Khyle Diaz came off the bench to score 15 for the Giants.
The Hornets snapped a three-game slide to improve to 3-8 this season. Division III Keystone fell to 2-4.
… Waller was tops in the MEAC in three-point percentage at .511 entering the game. He’s now 32-for-56 from beyond the arc for a .571 mark this season. His overall shooting percentage had risen to a team-best .541 (46-85) following today’s performance.
… Mallory raised his field goal percentage to .540 this season. He was fifth in the MEAC in shooting entering today’s contest.
… Morgan’s 10 assists tied for the most by a DSU player since Jay Threatt tallied 11 against North Carolina State on Dec. 22, 2010.
… Redshirt sophomore Jamelle Christian game off the bench to score five points and dish out four assists in 17 minutes, each a career-high, for the Hornets.
… Delaware State will be off for final exams next week before returning to action at Binghamton (N.Y.) on Dec. 17. Game time is 2 p.m.
