Dover, Del. (Nov. 11, 2016) --- Six players scored in double-figures to lead Delaware State to a 103-56 victory over Clarks Summitt in the Hornets' 2016-17 opener this evening. Junior forward Kavon Waller led the way with 16 points on six-for eight shooting from the field, including four-of-six on three point shots. The four three-pointers matched his career-high.
Senior DeAndre Haywood added 14 points (6-10 FGs), while freshman Kobe Gantz and Artem Tavakalyan (jr.) came off the bench to also score 14.
Dana Raysor (jr.) tallied 13 points (4-7 FGs; 3-5 3pt.FG) and DeVaughn Mallory (so.) tacked on 10 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
The Hornets were 40-for-74 from the field (54.1%), including 11-of-21 on three point shots (52.4%).
Delaware State outrebounded the Defender 47-31.
The score was 20-20 midway through the first half before the Hornets took control. Mallory capped off a 24-9 run with a layup to give DSU a 44-29 lead with 3:36 left in the half.
The Hornets stretched their lead to 55-36 at the break.
Delaware State's point total was its highest since a 107-48 victory over Cairn on Nov. 9, 2013. DSU's 11 three-points were also its most since knocking down 12 against Summitt last season.
The Hornets are expected to have a much tougher test in its next contest on Sunday against visiting Texas Southern. Start time is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
