Dover, Del. (Oct. 18, 2016) --- The Delaware State volleyball team gave La Salle a tough fight in two sets, but came up empty in a 3-0 loss to the Explorers in Memorial Hall this evening.
The scores were 25-19, 25-9 and 25-22.
Bryanna Davis had team-highs of 11 kills and 10 digs to lead La Salle to its 10th victory of the season (10-13). Kathryn Wood topped all players with 31 assists for the Explorers.
NaKia Jones led Delaware State with seven kills, while teammate Aaliyah McBean had a match-high 15 digs. Morgan Tennant recorded 18 assists to lead the Hornets.
The score was 4-4 in the first set when La Salle took control. The Explorers scored 10 of the next 13 points, and opened up a 14-7 lead on a kill by Davis.
Delaware State (0-22) trailed 16-9 before cutting the deficit to four (23-19) on a kill by Jenessa Helu off a feed from Tennant.
The third set featured seven ties. The Hornets scored the first two points of the set, and opened up their biggest lead, 10-7, on a service ace by Danyelle Tucker.
The score was tied at 12, 13, 14 and 16 before La Salle grabbed its first lead of the set, 17-16, on a DSU error.
The Explorers opened up their biggest lead of the third set, 21-17, but the Hornets pulled to within one (23-22) on a La Salle error.
Delaware State had 24 kills and 19 errors on 88 attacks for a .057 hitting percentage in the match. La Salle posted a .276 attack percentage, recording 39 kills and 12 errors on 98 attempts.
The Hornets had 43 digs to 42 for La Salle.
Delaware State returns to action on Friday with a non-conference match at home against New Hampshire on Friday (Oct. 21). The contest is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
