Dover, Del. (Nov. 19, 2012) --- Delaware State University defensive back Terrick Colston (fr.; Lakeland, Fla.) is among 20 finalists for the national 2012 Jerry Rice Award, which honors the top freshman in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). Before his NFL Hall-of-Fame career, Jerry Rice was a star at FCS Mississippi Valley State University in the 1980s.
Colston was fifth in the MEAC in tackles at 8.6 per game (95 total; 46 solo) during the 2012 season. He was also credited with three interceptions, 2.5 tackles-for-loss; five pass break- ups, a forced fumble and fumble recovery. Colston returned an interception for a touchdown in the Hornets' 31-17 win over South Carolina State on Oct. 13.
Colston was a two-time MEAC Rookie-of-the-Week honoree this season.
The Jerry Rice award winner is selected by a national panel of sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries this week, and presented at the FCS Awards Banquet and Presentation on Dec. 17 in Philadelphia.
