HORNETS TOO MUCH FOR HIGHLANDERS, 95-46

Dover, Del. (Nov. 12, 2012) --- Delaware State recorded 24 assists on 39 baskets in a 95-46 win over Cairn University (Pa.) in Memorial Hall this evening. Fourteen players scored at least three points for the Hornets. Tahj Tate led the way with 16 points. Tate was eight-for-nine from the field. He also dished out three assists.

Nick Doyle came off the bench to tally 10, while Kendall Gray (4-5 FG); Miles Bowman and Chris Lewis collected eight points each for the Hornets. Lewis also led all players with five assists and tied for game-high honors with seven rebounds. Gray topped all players with four blocks.

All 16 players on the Hornets' roster played at least four minutes in the contest. Fourteen DSU players had rebounds, while 11 recorded an assist.

Cairn's Seth Heinicke had a game-high 17 points, while Charles Hopkins added 13 for the Highlanders.

The Hornets led 9-6 before taking control of the game with a 16-0 run. Tate capped off the run with a follow-up basket by Tate to open up a 25-6 lead with 11:05 left in the first half. Tate scored points and Amere May four during the run.

Cairn committed seven turnovers and was 0-for-2 from the field during the Delaware State spurt.

After the Highlanders pulled to within 25-11, the Hornet bench keyed a 17-0 spurt. Back-up forward Scott Sill finished off the run with a lay-up off a pass by Chris Lewis to give DSU a 42-11 lead with 4:05 left in the half. The Hornet defense held the Highlanders to 0-for-6 shooting from the field and four turnovers during the run.

DSU led 46-19 at the half. The Hornet bench outscored Cairn's reserves 21-0 in the opening 20 minutes.

Delaware State stretched its lead to 64-23 on a three-pointer by Tyshawn Bell with 15:06 left to play. The Hornets held their biggest lead, 95-44, on a three-point shot by Lewis with 1:02 remaining in the game.

DSU was 39-for-78 from the field (50.0%), including 7-of-28 from three-point territory (25.0%).

Cairn hit 15 of its 46 shots from the field (32.6%). The Highlanders were 2-of-8 from beyond the arc.

The Hornets won the rebound battle 46-33, and forced Cairn into 28 turnovers.

Delaware State (2-0) will face its first Division I opponent of the young season on Wednesday (Nov. 14) when Wagner (N.Y.) visits Memorial Hall. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
