PHOENIX, Md. - The Delaware State
University women's golf team completed the first tournament in school history
Monday as they tied for 16th place at the Tignanelli Towson Invitational,
held at the Towson Golf and Country Club.
The
Hornets finished the two-round tournament with a score of 690 after hitting a
346 Monday. St. John's University won
the event with a score of 611, while defending champion Old Dominon was second
at 616 and William & Mary finished third with a 626.
Freshman
Marie-France Finn (Memramcook, New
Brunswick, Canada), who entered the day tied for 12th place, held
her place and finished the tournament with a scorecard of 78-78-156. Her 12th place finish pitted her
six strokes off of first.
Finn,
who saw her first collegiate birdie on Sunday, recorded three more Monday,
starting right away on her first hole of the day. On the 397-yard no. 10, Finn shot a three on
the par-four hole. She followed with
birdies on holes 15 and six.
Fellow
freshman Nicole Rafer (Berlin, Md.)
finished the tournament tied for 50th place with an 81-87-168. Rafer posted just one birdie on the day in
addition to four double bogeys.
The
biggest improvement from day one for Delaware State came from freshman Elaine Aisha Peete (Ponte Vedra, Fla.),
who carded a 93-84-177 to finish tied for 69th place. Peete, who started the day tied for 81st,
recorded her first career birdie on the 150-yard, par-three hole 16. She followed with another birdie on hole
three, a 368-yard, par-four challenge.
Peete bogeyed each hole on Sunday.
Freshman
Ellisa Lee (Ellicott City, Md.)
rounded out the scores for the Hornets with an 81st place card of
92-97-189.
Old
Dominion's Elizabeth Haycock and St. John's Harrin Lee tied for the individual
lead with respective scores of 75-75-150 and 77-73-150, with Haycock taking
first-place hardware based on a tiebreaker.
Delaware
State takes the next two weekends off before traveling to Charleston, S.C. for
the South Carolina State Invitational, held at Patriots Point Sept. 29-Oct. 2.
