DSU WIN STREAK ENDS ON WALK OFF AT UMES

Princess Anne, Md. (May 12, 2012)  -- Delaware State's school-record 17-game win streak came to an end with a 5-4 walk-off loss to UMES in the regular season finale for both teams at Hawk Field this afternoon.

UMES scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by James Newsome in the bottom of the ninth inning. Stephen Bull was walked by DSU reliever Chad Sturgeon to lead off the ninth. Bull advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a passed. Bobby Brown came in to pitch for the Hornets. Brown got Newsome to fly out to right field, but Bull tagged on the play and crossed the plate ahead of the throw by Tony Gatto for the winning run.

The Hawks opened the scoring when Newsome doubled in Tre-von Johnson with two outs in the bottom of the first inning.

The score remained the same till the Hornets scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Peter Broehl, Troy Drummond and Scott Davis opened the inning with consecutive singles to load the bases.  Cameron Cecil then reached base on an error, allowing Broehl and Troy Drummond to score, giving DSU a 2-1 lead. Davis later scored on a fielder's choice by Ryan Haas to stretch the Hornets' lead to 3-1.

UMES answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 3-3.

The Hawks regained the lead 4-3 on a sacrifice fly by Dustin Aigner with two outs in the last of the eighth.

Delaware State evened the score with a run in the top of the ninth inning.

JP Frey started the rally with a one-out single. Aaron Nardone followed with a single, allowing Frey to go to third. Frey continued home on a UMES error to tie the game at 4-4.   

Frey was 3-for-4 at the plate, while Drummond had two hits in four at bats for the Hornets. Drummond was 8-for-12 with seven RBI in the three-game series

The winning run by the Hawks was charged to Sturgeon, who suffered his first loss of the season for the Hornets. Bernard Parker (2-1) was the winning pitcher for UMES.

Delaware State ends the 2012 regular season with an overall record of 35-15-1. The Hornets claimed the MEAC North championship with a 22-2 record in division play.

DSU will return to action on Wednesday at the 2012 MEAC Tournament in Norfolk, Va.
