NORFOLK, Va. - After recording a career-high 10 strikeouts and leading the Delaware State University softball team to their second straight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Northern Division title this weekend, the conference announced Monday senior Casey Beighley (Los Angeles, Calif.) as their Pitcher of the Week.
Beighley went 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in seven innings for the Hornets. In the first game against UMES, she pitched six scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and one walk. Beighley also went 1.0 inning against Towson on Wednesday with two strikeouts. From the plate, the senior hit .500 (5-for-10) with a double, home run, two runs and four RBI.
Beighley finished the regular season from the pitcher's circle with a 2.61 ERA and was 8-4 with a team-high two saves in 24 appearances. She leads the team with 51 strikeouts in 77.2 innings pitched. From the plate, Beighley posts a .331 batting average in 41 games played/started. She is tied for second on the team with 42 hits, including seven doubles, three triples and three home runs.
Fellow senior Breanne Parr (Camarillo, Calif.) and freshman Bria Green (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) were named "Other Top Performers" for the week. Parr was 6-for-11 (.545) on the week with a home run, triple and double with four RBI. Green went 2-for-4 with three runs in Sunday's 10-1 victory over UMES.
Savannah State's Madison Hedderly was named the Player of the Week while teammate Amber Hallman earned Rookie of the Week honors.
The Hornets finished the 2012 regular season with a 25-16-1 overall record and were 14-3 in the MEAC. The three conference losses marks the fewest since the 2006 season when DSU finished 20-3 in MEAC play (including postseason) and the 16 overall losses is the fewest since 1994 when the Hornets were 18-10.
Delaware State awaits their seeding matchup in the 2012 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championships, held this Thursday through Saturday, in Ormond Beach, Fla.
