DOVER, Del. - With their on-court
leader sitting on the bench with concussion-like symptoms, the Delaware State
University women's basketball team succumbed to a hot-shooting Fordham team,
63-48, to wrap up non-conference play Wednesday evening at Memorial Hall.
Sophomore
Deanna Harmon (Owings Mills, Md.), a
team captain who leads the team in minutes (35.9), Assists (2.8) and steals
(2.4), sat out her first career game since middle school.
Redshirt
freshman Tierra Hawkins (Clinton,
Md.) and true freshman Chelsea Dukes
(Baltimore, Md.) lead the Lady Hornets with 14 points each. Hawkins shot 7-for-11 from the field and also
collected a team-high seven rebounds in the loss.
Del
State opened the game with a 6-0 lead within the first two minutes before the
Rams went on a 7-0 run to take a lead. Sophomore
Tasia Bristow (Baltimore, Md.) stopped
the Rams' run with a jumper in the paint and redshirt sophomore Uchechi Ahaiwe (Riverdale, Md.) knocked
down a free throw to give the Lady Hornets their last lead of the game at 9-7.
A
3-pointer from Fordham's Abigail Corning with five-minutes remaining in the
first half gave the Rams a 12-point lead at 28-16. Another trey for Fordham with 19-seconds
remaining in the half posted the score at 37-22 in favor of the Rams.
The
second half started with a jumper from Hawkins before Fordham took an 18-point
lead at 44-26.
The
Lady Hornets would come within 14 at 44-30 with another Hawkins jumper with
14:18 left in the game.
The
Rams took their largest lead of the game of 20 points with 4:00 on the clock
with yet another 3-pointer from Corning to go up, 60-40.
Del
State gave up just one more Fordham field goal and cut the score to within 13
points, but it was too little, too late for the Lady Hornets as they lost,
63-48.
Fordham's
Abigail Corning led all scorers with 19 points on 7-of-11 from the field,
including 4-for-7 from behind the arc.
Charlotte Stoddart posted a game-high 10 rebounds in the Rams' win.
The
loss moves DSU to 3-12 on the season and is their 12th loss in the
past 13 games while Fordham stops a two-game losing streak and moves to 9-6 on
the year.
The
Lady Hornets continue Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play and look for their
first MEAC win of the season as they match up against Route 13 rival,
University of Maryland Eastern Shore, on Jan. 14 at Memorial Hall.
