Dover, Del. (Aug. 29, 2010) --- Jess Swartzentruber scored two goals, and four other players tallied one each, in Florida Gulf Coast's 6-0 win over Delaware State in women's soccer in Ft. Myers, Fla., this afternoon.
The Hornets fell to 0-4 on the season, while the Eagles improved to 1-1.
Florida Gulf Coast opened the scoring on a goal by Olivia Elias off a feed from Katie Donnellan in the seventh minute.
The Eagles struck again in the 22nd minute when Donnellan fired a shot past Delaware State goal keeper Courteney Haas to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.
Florida Gulf Coast led by that same score at the break. The Eagles had 15 first period shots, compared to one for the Hornets.
Swartzentruber scored back-to-back goals past Delaware State reserve goal keeper Alexandria Young in the 51st and 57th minutes to give FGCU a 4-0 lead.
The Eagles closed out the scoring with goals in the 71st and 72nd minutes.
The Eagles outshot the Hornets 27-2. DSU was unable to fire a shot on goal in the contest.
Young allowed four goals, but recorded nine saves for the Hornets.
Delaware State returns to action on Friday (Sep. 3) at Binghamton University (N.Y.). The match gets underway at 7:00 p.m.
