Dover, Del. (July 9, 2010) - The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference has announced that Delaware State University bowler Kalyn Washburn has been selected as the 2010 MEAC Woman-of-the- Year.
The award, selected annually by MEAC senior woman administrators, celebrates the achievements of female senior student-athletes who have excelled in academics, athletics, service and leadership.
Washburn, a native of Tucson, Ariz., will be honored during the annual MEAC Football Press Luncheon on Friday, July, 30 at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott Hotel in Norfolk, Virginia.
She is the first Delaware State University student-athlete to earn the MEAC award, and is the conference nominee for the 2010 NCAA Woman of the Year.
A two-time All-MEAC Second Team bowling selection, Washburn helped lead Delaware State to consecutive MEAC championships and NCAA Tournament appearances in two seasons with the Hornets (2008-09; 2009-10).
As a senior, Washburn averaged 198.1 in 57 games for the Hornets. She rolled a season-high 256 against Arkansas State at the Mid-Winter Classic.
The 2010 Delaware State University Scholar-Athlete of the Year spent time off the lanes volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, Race for the Cure, Prima Vera and Relay for Life.
She also served as a member of the MEAC's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and donated her time as a basketball coach, soccer coach, bowling coach, and orchestra classroom assistant.
A May 2010 Delaware State University graduate, Washburn was selected as the DSU English Department's Scholar of the Year (2008-09) and was listed on two consecutive MEAC Commissioner's All-Academic Teams (2009 and 2010). She earned a 4.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at DSU.
