HORNETS NOTCH FIRST WIN ON ELLIOTT GEM

HORNETS FALL TO LIBERTY, 8-1

Lynchburg, Va. (Mar. 5, 2010) --- Shawn Teufel pitched six shutout innings and seven players drove in at least one run in Liberty's 8-1 baseball win over Delaware State at Worthington Stadium this afternoon.

The Flames improved to 7-0 on the season, while the Hornets fell to 3-4.

Teufel allowed just two hits and struck out eight to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Liberty opened the scoring with five runs in the bottom of the first. Five players drove in a run for the Flames, who had six hits in the inning.   

Delaware State trailed 6-0 after Liberty tacked on a run in the second. The Flames closed out their scoring with two runs in the bottom of the third.

The Hornets avoided the shutout with a run in the eighth. Peter Broehl singled to lead off the inning, and came around to score on a two-out single by Mike Rizzuto.

Starter Jordan Elliot (1-2) was the losing pitcher for the Hornets. Elliot settled down after the first three innings, allowing just one hit in his last four innings of work.

The Hornets and Flames will play game two of the three-game set on Saturday in Lynchburg, Va.
